Extension Maintenance

Your hair extensions are made from high quality human hair and that means you can wash and style your hair (almost) as if it were your own! However, there are some tips to help you maintain the health and integrity of your investment!! Your hair should remain beautiful for 9-12 months depending on how you care for it!

BRUSHING DRY HAIR:

  • AM/PM: Using your extension hair brush, hold down the top of the rows to prevent pulling and tension on your scalp and gently brush through your hair. Start brushing at the bottom of your hair and gradually work towards the top.

  • To prevent tangles and keep hair blended, brush hair 2-3x daily! Tangles left unattended can cause matting.

WASHING:

We recommend washing your hair 1-2x a week

  • Always brush your hair BEFORE washing. We recommend the GLOW brush.

  • After working out, if your hair is wet, power dry the root on cool until 100% dry. If you have to wash, just wash your natural on the top (do a ‘ top wash’)

  • Water filters for your shower are recommended to block hard minerals or chlorine that can make your hair color dull, discolored, or brassy!

  • Use a recommended sulfate free, color safe shampoo and conditioner. If you have any questions about this we would love to help you find your best match. We do NOT recommend Olaplex or K18 for your extensions. We do, however, recommend using a moisturizing mask weekly.

  • Make sure to rinse thoroughly. There should be no conditioner left in your hair.

  • Use a micro-fiber towel to squeeze excess water from hair.

DRYING:

  • Always use a heat protectant, and always power-dry (blow dryer only, no brush) the top of the weft until 100% dry. Leaving the top of your wefts wet can cause matting, mildew, and the threads to break down! You can choose to blow-dry or air-dry the rest of the extension hair and your hair!

  • If blow-drying, section and pin your natural hair up. Power-dry each row. Start on the bottom row and work up the head. The top of the wefts should be 100% dry, and the rest of the hair should be 90% dry. You can now use a round or flat brush to smooth until the rest of the hair is completely dry! For curly hair and extensions, dry top of weft then air dry or diffuse.

HEAT STYLING:

  • Heat styling is fine but always use your heat protectant first!! The more times you run any type of heat styling appliance through your hair, the sooner the hair will need to be replaced! Use heat tools on mid-setting, and try to only use 1-2x a week.

  •  If you use dry shampoo or dry texture spray (or any other powder product), always use AFTER heat styling.

BRUSHING WET/DAMP HAIR:

  • Apply detangling product, and use a glow brush to gently brush through your hair. Hair is at its most fragile state when wet, so treat it gently!

  • Start at the bottom and gradually work towards the top. Use one hand to hold down the top of the row to prevent pulling and tension on your scalp. If you struggle with lots of tangles, section hair as you go starting with your lowest row.

LIFE:

  • You can live a normal, active lifestyle even with your extensions! However, be careful whenever using sunscreen!! There is a product in most sunscreens called Avobenzone. AVOID THIS INGREDIENT! If it happens to get on your extensions, this can cause your hair to turn a peachy color and may not be able to be removed! Look for mineral based sunscreens. They typically do not contain this ingredient,

  • Avoid Saltwater and chlorine if possible. Chlorine can turn blonde extensions green and compromise your all over color as well as break-down and damage your extensions!

PRODUCTS:

  • Select professional hair products! Non-professional products can reduce the life-span of your extensions, cause build up of product, remove color and discolor your extensions!

  • Using a high quality hair oil that is safe for extensions once a day can increase the longevity of your extensions! Kevin Murphy Young.Again oil is our absolute favorite!

  • Only use Sulfate and paraben free products. With extensions you’ll want to stay away from protein based products.

  • It is also important to use a hair mask every few washes, as needed. Kevin Murphy Hydrate.Me Mask is a great option!

SLEEPING:

  • Brush your hair, place it in a low pony or loose low braid, and secure with a silk/satin scrunchie or invisibobble hair tie.

  • We recommend also using a silk pillowcase to reduce friction on your hair during sleep!
